Cracked, chipped, or otherwise damaged teeth don't have to mar the smile forever. Veneers are custom-made porcelain pieces that exactly match the tooth's undamaged natural appearance so that they can restore the smile to full brightness and beauty. Dr. Zack, a general dentist in private practice at Edward J Zack DDS in Stamford, Connecticut, is happy to help his patients get the veneers they need to smile widely again.

Veneers Q&A

What are veneers?

A veneer is a small porcelain shell that's custom-made for tooth concealment. Veneers can cover issues like discoloration and can also be used to change the shape, length, or overall size of the tooth.

What types of problems can veneers fix?

Veneers can be an excellent solution if you have issues such as:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Worn down teeth
  • Dark or discolored teeth
  • Slightly misaligned front teeth
  • Oddly shaped teeth
  • Small gaps between your front teeth

How does the veneer process work?

During the initial visit, Dr. Zack evaluates your teeth and create a mold of the tooth. Next, he removes a small portion of tooth enamel to create a surface to bond the veneer to. A temporary veneer is placed on your tooth to protect it until your custom veneer is ready.

Dr. Zack removes the temporary veneer before bonding the custom veneer permanently into place. With the custom veneer in place, you can use the tooth just as you used the natural tooth beneath it.

What is the lifespan of veneers?

Veneers usually last around 10 years, but this can vary by patient. You can get the maximum wear from them if you brush, floss, and see Dr. Zack for regularly scheduled appointments. When it's time for veneer replacement, Dr. Zack can remove the old veneer and bond a new one in place.

Are veneers or crowns better?

Veneers and crowns are alike in many ways, but they serve different purposes. Veneers only cover the front of the tooth, so they're not quite as sturdy as crowns. In general, they’re best for the front teeth while Dr. Zack uses crowns on the molars and other teeth in the middle and back of the mouth.

Are veneers covered by insurance?

Veneers are usually considered to be a cosmetic dentistry procedure by insurance companies, and thus they may not be covered. However, veneers do add extra strength and stability to damaged teeth, so they have a functional use. Speak to your insurance company about coverage details to be sure.

Dr. Zack is happy to help you get the stunning smile you deserve using veneers. Make an appointment online anytime or call the office for help.
