Orthodontics Q&A

What is the goal of orthodontics?

The goal of orthodontic care is to treat problems and malformations in the bite and jaw. Orthodontics can also prevent problems from developing at all if used early enough in a patient's life.

While the primary purpose of orthodontics is structural correction, for many patients the cosmetic benefit of a straight smile is just as significant.

What are the options in braces?

There are several different types of braces available today, including:

Traditional braces

Traditional braces have now gone high tech. They're far smaller, more lightweight, and more comfortable to wear than they were decades ago. Traditional braces include stainless steel brackets, a connecting archwire, and small elastics (the ligatures.) Some traditional braces now self-ligating, so they include just the brackets and the archwire.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces are much like traditional braces except for the brackets. Brackets are made from a clear ceramic that's much less obvious than the stainless steel brackets of traditional braces.

Damon braces

Damon braces use self-ligation, and they have a special slider for archwire connection. Damon braces can straighten teeth more quickly than traditional or ceramic braces, and fewer dental visits are needed overall.

How long do you need to wear braces?

It depends on the patient and their specific issues. Most patients wear braces for 18-24 months, but it can be shorter or longer. The younger that a patient is, the easier it is to correct alignment, and this may lead to shorter treatment periods than those needed for adults.

Do you need a retainer after wearing braces?

Yes, a retainer is almost always beneficial for patients who wore braces. Retainers are especially crucial in the weeks and months immediately after the braces are removed. During this time, your teeth may be particularly susceptible to shifting back into their previous positions, and the retainer prevents this from occurring.

How long are retainers needed after braces?

It can vary by patient. Most patients need to wear a retainer for an amount of time equal to their braces treatment period. While it may seem inconvenient to wear a retainer, it's important to know that the retainer is the best possible way to maintain your straight new smile.
